Weeroona’s Biggest Morning Tea

Cancer is a widespread disease that affects millions of people worldwide. In Australia specifically, cancer is a significant health concern. According to statistics from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), cancer is one of the leading causes of illness and death in the country, as of the latest available data, which is typically updated annually, its estimated that around 150,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed each year in Australia. Additionally, cancer is responsible for a significant number of deaths annually. The number of people affected by cancer extends beyond those diagnosed with the disease to include their families, friends, and caregivers who are impacted by its physical, emotional, and financial toll.

The Cancer Council Australia is the country’s leading independent non – governmental organisation dedicated to reducing the impact of cancer on Australian communities. It is their mission to work towards a cancer – free future by undertaking research, providing information and support services, advocating for policy change, and promoting cancer prevention and early detection initiatives.

Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is an annual fundraising event organised by the Cancer Council Australia. It typically takes place in May, during Australia’s autumn season. The event encourages people to host morning tea parties at their homes, workplaces, schools, or communities to raise funds.

Fundraising: The primary purpose of Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is to raise funds for the Cancer Council. Money raised through donations, sponsorships, and various fundraising activities during the even helps support cancer research, prevention programs, support services for patients and their families, and advocacy efforts.

Awareness: Hosting a morning tea provides an opportunity to raise awareness about cancer and the work of the Cancer Council in communities across Australia. Participants learn about the importance of cancer prevention, early detection, and the support available to those affected by the disease.

Community Engagement: Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea brings people together – friends, family, colleagues, and communities  - to share a cuppa and conversation. It fosters a sense of community spirit and solidarity in the fight against cancer, as people come together to support a common cause.

Support for Patients and Families:  The funds raised through Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea enable the Cancer Council to provide a wide range of support services for cancer patients, survivors, and their families. This support may include counselling, accommodation assistance, financial aid, and practical support services to help individuals cope with the challenges of cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Research:  A portion of the funds raised goes towards supporting cancer research initiatives aimed at improving our understanding of the disease, developing better treatments, and finding ways to prevent cancer. This research ultimately contributes to better outcomes for cancer patients and helps advance the field of oncology.

Participants can register to host a morning tea event and invite their friends, family, colleagues, or neighbors to join them. They can bake or buy treats such as cakes, muffins, cookies, and sandwiches to serve at the event. Guests are usually encouraged to donate to the Cancer Council.
